Bisma Asif was elected to the Queensland Parliament in October 2024 and is the Assistant Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism and Citizenship and Assistant Shadow Minister for the Environment.
Bisma is the 99th Woman to be elected to the Queensland Parliament, she is also the first Muslim and Punjabi elected.
She believes in building a fairer future where everyone has the chance to work hard and get ahead. She understands the need for strong governance, to create the conditions for individuals and businesses to thrive.
Bisma was born in Pakistan, grew up in Blacktown and now calls Sandgate home. Her family emigrated to Australia in 2004 - for better opportunities and a brighter future. Bisma holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland. She supported herself through university in various hospitality jobs and has since dedicated her working life to electing Labor governments and enacting progressive policies.
At 19, she was studying full time, trying to navigate the welfare system, and working three jobs to keep a roof over her head. She joined Labor after experiencing firsthand the need for social workers, our welfare system and public health care (Medicare).
She is passionate about fostering a better future for all Australians through economic stability – by enhancing job security and securing equitable access to education and healthcare. Bisma believes access to quality health care should never be determined by your postcode, income, or background – health care is a right for all, not a privilege for the few.
